Our Story
It all started in on The Hill. At least that’s what one would have expected.
In 2015, Johanna and Geoff were both working on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. Johanna for the Minister of Foreign Affairs – appropriate given her love of international travel. Geoff for the Minister of Finance – appropriate given his love of fiscal responsibility (read: cheapness).
There were countless opportunities for them to meet – at work, at receptions, out with their many mutual friends – but it never happened. They somehow never crossed paths.
Over the next three years, they each went their own ways – embarking on new jobs, experiences, and travel. But forces would eventually bring them together. They met in Toronto in 2018. Things were natural and easy from the start.
But these same forces were not done producing unexpected twists – moving in together would involve an unexpected return to Ottawa. What was supposed to be a two-week quarantine at the start of COVID in March 2020 (remember that?) turned into six months of living in Johanna’s dad’s home in the Ottawa suburbs. Their favourite hobbies soon became trips to Costco, Johanna watching Geoff cut the grass, and cheering for the Sens.
When they returned to their natural yuppie habitat in downtown Toronto, they moved into Geoff’s condo with its great view of their first date location (the Beverley Hotel rooftop).
But there’s one more twist to the story – in March 2023, they embarked on their next adventure together, moving to Washington, DC. That causes us to wonder: maybe The Hill was always supposed to play a part in their story. Just this time it isn’t ‘The Hill’ in Ottawa but the one in DC.
